The Amazonía Region is a region in southern Colombia. It comprises the departments of Amazonas, Caquetá, Guainía, Guaviare, Putumayo and Vaupés, and covers an area of 403,000 km², 35% of Colombia's total territory.[1] The region is marked by its unique jungles, part of the Amazon rainforest.
Amazonas is located in the frontier with Brazil and Peru. It is one of the most austral zones of the country. Its weather is wet and tropical. It is plenty of forests, rivers, Lacs and marshy zones.
The population´s work is centered on fishing, tourism, comerce and the exploitation of wood. Its main villages are Leticia and Puerto Nariño.
Leticia
This is a famous region because it is situated in a frontier. The most copious river, The Amazonas River, crosses it. Its general developing and its landscapes make it a privileged and admired zone. In Leticia, it is possible to practice ecological and adventure turism through the river and by visiting natural parks as Amacayacu and Isla de los Micos (The Island of Monkeys).
Puerto Nariño is located 72 Km. from Leticia. This is the second village of the district. It is inhabited by different ethnic groups as Ticunas and Yaguas. The Lac Tarapoto is part of the region. Puerto Nariño has a good tourist infrastructure, an excellent gastronomy and beautiful landscapes.
The city is composed by many other important villages: La Chorrera, El Encanto, La Pedrera, La Victoria, Mirití- Paraná, Puerto Santander, Puerto Alegría, Puerto Arica and Tarapacá.
It is close to The Apaporis River. This amazonic jungle contains amazing falls which form a unique torrent. Such torrent is divided in two parts that will form a new fall called “La Cama de la Anaconda” (The Bed of the Anaconda) because of the quantity of serpents that live there.
It is located 60 Km. from Leticia. Its typical name means “River of the Hamacas” a variety of animals that are residents of the park. One of these animals is the pink dolphin, a unique type of dolphin that lives in the Lac Yahuarcacas.
This park contains exuberant landscapes that preserve marvelous natural zones. In this jungle, it is possible to find bLack crocodiles (10 meters long) and the biggest river turtles in the world.
It is a sanctuary of flora and fauna. It is situated in front of the Santa Sofía Institute. It preserves a great variety of monkeys. The different flora and the diverse fauna make it an interesting pLace for tourists
